Curatorial
Beyond Art
With all its political and ideological baggage, the ‘white cube’ gallery space has a somewhat contested legacy. In her curatorial projects, Katharina has strived to either (a) create an immersive experience, to (b) explore dynamic formats, or (c) to pursue a didactic approach. These approaches have one idea in common: They are ways of going beyond a detached, fetishizing presentation of ‘objets d’art’ (her PhD project “Post-Readymade” tackled this idea).
Examples for projects she curated in 2012 and 2017: As part of an exhibition series for a gallery space inside the narrowest building of Frankfurt am Main Arjuna Neuman presented an invisible work, asking audiences to pick up their phones and start texting a ghost (“This is Naima”). “Cinderella Ashtray” was a group show that traced contemporary surrealism in LA’s upcoming art scene. Within two months, while Curator in Residence at Concord Los Angeles, Katharina developed a pop-up exhibition designed like a movie set. In Berlin, she co-founded “State of the Art” together with Dennis Rudolph – a short-lived project space and artist residency for dancers, artists and film makers from Los Angeles. In 2017, she curated XOXO for Soy Capitan Gallery, a show about loneliness and digital intimacy.
