Katharina Weinstock: Post-Readymade. Arthistoricum Heidelberg 2025.

Abstract: Duchamp’s ‘Readymade’ was one of the most influential concepts in 20th century art. However, the art practices it has inspired in the past 100 years have turned quite critical of the gallery space and its tendency towards detachment and fetishization of the objects it holds. In order to capture artistically appropriated objects that update and transform Duchamp’s historical concept, I offer the term ‘Post-Readymade’: Found objects like nameless gravestones that pass through the gallery space only temporarily… When artists today appropriate objects from the everyday world, it is no longer just to expand the notion of art. Much more urgent is the desire to negotiate a changing, crisis-ridden material world – and the human destinies entangled with it.

Abstract: Generativität steht für eine neue Entwicklungsstufe in der Geschichte automatisierter Produktion. Auf Wortbefehl hin kann generative KI bestechende Bildwelten erzeugen, die selbst surreale Kompositionen in fotografischer Echtheit erscheinen lassen. Im Unterschied zur Fotografie, die einst die Bildgeschichte veränderte, handelt es sich um eine algorithmische Kreativität, die an Bildmotiven trainiert wird. Indem sie deren Sehweisen und Stereotypien reproduziert, trägt sie allmählich und über die digitale Kommunikation hinaus zu einer neuen Ästhetik bei, mit langfristigen Folgen für die Gesellschaft und ihre bildliche Erinnerung.   • UMBAU journal – founder and editor from 2020 to 2023
  • Concept: At a small multidisciplinary art university with an international community much larger than meets the eye, synergies flare up quickly, however often without leaving much of a trace. With UMBAU I wanted to capture the transitional. In 2020, HfG Karlsruhe liked my pitch for an academic online journal. I was provided with the budget to put together a small team, with which I then developed the journal from scratch: Its website, team structure, and work flows. The first issue Political Bodies appeared in 2021, and Fragile Futures in 2022. Ever since, UMBAU has been documenting trans-disciplinary modes of thinking beyond the walls of the university.
